How to Get Your Child Into Veterans Hill Elementary School

How to Get Your Child Into Veterans Hill Elementary School

It usually happens while you’re comparing neighborhoods on a Sunday afternoon. You pull up a listing near Limmer Loop in Round Rock, the school filter shows Veterans Hill Elementary, and the numbers look good — above-average proficiency scores, a Gifted & Talented program, a student-teacher ratio better than the state average. You’re ready to add it to the list. Then you notice something that doesn’t quite line up: the district isn’t Round Rock ISD. It’s Hutto ISD. The address says Round Rock. The school district doesn’t.

Here’s the short version, and it’s the same answer no matter which Austin-area school a family is chasing: in Texas, public school enrollment is determined by your home address, and the school district that serves that address is what matters — not the city name on the mailing address. Veterans Hill Elementary sits inside Round Rock city limits, but it’s part of Hutto ISD. If your address falls inside its attendance zone, your child is enrolled. No application, no lottery, no waitlist for your assigned campus.

This post walks through how that works, where the Veterans Hill zone is, what homes there look like, and what to watch for when a city name and a school district name don’t match. In my time as a realtor, school zone moves come up often with the families I work with, and the Hutto ISD detail is one of the first things I check before anyone falls in love with a house.

How Texas School Attendance Zones Actually Work — and Why “Round Rock” Doesn’t Always Mean Round Rock ISD

Families who haven’t bought a home in Texas before sometimes expect an application process, a lottery, or an open-enrollment system that lets them pick any school in the area. That’s how it works in some states. In Texas, the default is simpler and less flexible: every public school student is assigned to the campus that serves their home address.

The part that trips people up is that school district boundaries and city boundaries can be drawn independently of each other. There are homes in the city of Austin that are in Round Rock ISD, and homes in Round Rock, TX that sit inside Hutto ISD (depending on exactly where the property line falls). Veterans Hill Elementary, at 555 Limmer Loop, is a good example: the address reads Round Rock, but the campus is part of Hutto Independent School District.

As long as a family’s address falls inside the Veterans Hill attendance zone within Hutto ISD, their child has an automatic right to enroll there. Hutto ISD does offer transfer options for students who live outside a campus’s zone, but transfers depend on available capacity and are approved at the district’s discretion. They’re not a reliable way to land at a specific school. If Veterans Hill is the goal, the reliable path is an address inside its zone in Hutto ISD.

One more thing worth knowing before you start a search: zone boundaries are drawn by the district and they can shift over time as enrollment grows or new campuses open. Before any offer goes in on a specific address, I verify the zone directly with Hutto ISD — not by relying on what a listing portal’s school filter shows, which can be wrong or out of date, especially in areas like this one where district and city lines don’t match.

Where Is the Veterans Hill Elementary Attendance Zone?

Veterans Hill Elementary is located at 555 Limmer Loop, in the area of Round Rock generally known as Stony Point, inside Hutto ISD. The campus serves PK through 5th grade and sits in a part of Round Rock that’s grown steadily over the past two decades — a mix of established subdivisions rather than a single, large master-planned community.

The location puts families close to some of the area’s biggest landmarks: Kalahari Resorts and its indoor water park, the Round Rock Premium Outlets, and St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center are all nearby, along with quick access to I-35 and SH-130. For a family relocating from out of state, those are useful orientation points — even before the school zone enters the conversation.

The detail that matters most, though, is the one from the section above: because this zone sits right on the line between Round Rock ISD and Hutto ISD, two homes a few streets apart can be zoned to entirely different districts and entirely different elementary schools, even though both have “Round Rock, TX” on the mailing address. I confirm the specific zone — and the specific district — for every address before a buyer I’m working with gets attached to a house. It’s a quick check, and it’s the difference between a home that gets your child into Veterans Hill and one that doesn’t, no matter how similar the two properties look online.

The rough borders for Veterans Hill Elementary are County Road 107 to the North, Country Road 110 to the West, Limmer Loop (to the West of 130) and Raintree Dr (to the East of 130) to the South, and Ed Schmidt to the East.

An important note on zone verification

Not every address in those rough borders is automatically inside the Veterans Hill zone. The area is a good size and the  boundaries may not include every corner of every sub-section. Online real estate portals frequently display inaccurate or outdated school zone data. A home listed as “near Veterans Hill Elementary” is not the same as a home confirmed inside the attendance zone. Verify the specific address with Hutto ISD before structuring your search around it. I do this for every buyer I work with.

What Homes Near Veterans Hill Elementary Look Like

Homes in this part of Round Rock and Hutto ISD tend to be single-family suburban houses built mostly from the 1990s through the 2010s, with a mix of one and two-story floor plans. It’s an established area rather than a brand-new one, which means lot sizes and layouts vary more than they would in a single recently-built community — and it also means there’s more room for a buyer’s agent who can tell the difference between a home that’s been well maintained and one that hasn’t.

On price, this corridor of Round Rock and Hutto ISD has historically run toward the more affordable end of the greater Austin market — homes in the area have traded in the high $300s to mid $500s in recent data, though that number moves with the broader market and should be checked against current listings before anyone sets expectations around it.

For commuters, the area sits close to SH-130 and I-35, both of which connect to the major employment centers along the Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown corridor. Compared to some of the higher-profile school zones in the area, this is a genuinely value-oriented entry point into a school that’s outperforming both its district and the state — which is its own kind of appeal for families who want a strong elementary school without paying the premium that comes with some other schools.

What to Know About Buying in a Specific School Zone

A few things I tell every family making a move like this, before they start touring homes:

Verify the zone — and the district — before going under contract. This is the step that matters most here, because the Round Rock / Hutto ISD line runs right through this part of town in a way that isn’t visible from the address alone. A listing portal’s school zone filter can show the wrong campus entirely. I confirm both the attendance zone and the district directly with Hutto ISD for every address before a buyer makes an offer. You can check Hutto ISD’s attendance zones here.

Zone boundaries can change. Hutto ISD is growing and periodically reviews attendance boundaries every few years, the way most fast-growing districts in Central Texas do. They try to keep changes from happening, and when they happen, students already enrolled are typically allowed to stay. Families buying with a 5 to 10-year horizon should know this going in — it’s not a reason to avoid an area, just something worth understanding.

Renting is also a path, if buying isn’t the right move yet. If a family wants their child enrolled at Veterans Hill now while they continue saving or searching, renting inside the zone is a legitimate option.

Don’t assume the answer is no on financing. I work with buyers across a range of credit and income situations, including buyers who’ve been told by someone else that they don’t qualify. Sometimes that’s accurate. Often it isn’t, or there’s a path the buyer didn’t know existed. If qualifying is the thing holding a family back from a home search in this price range, that’s a conversation worth having before assuming the door is closed.

Why Families Like Veterans Hill Elementary

Veterans Hill Elementary consistently performs above both Hutto ISD and Texas state averages in STAAR reading, math, and science across grades 3 through 5. The campus serves roughly 640 students in PK through 5th grade, with a student-teacher ratio around 13 to 1 — better than the state average of 14 to 1.

Teachers at Veterans Hill average around 10 years of classroom experience, with an average tenure at the campus itself of about 6 years — a sign that the staff isn’t turning over quickly. The school offers a Gifted & Talented program, and it’s one of the more diverse elementary campuses in the state, which is worth knowing for families who value that in a school community.

None of this makes Veterans Hill the kind of school that shows up in statewide top-1% rankings. What it offers instead is something a lot of families are quietly looking for: a stable, above-average neighborhood school in a part of Round Rock that’s still reasonably priced — if you know which side of the district line a home sits on.
